The UK Tax Return Season: The Issues We Saw (And How We Handled Them!)

Another UK tax return season has come and gone, and as always, it was a rollercoaster ride of deadlines, missing paperwork, and last-minute panics.  We love helping our clients navigate the complexities of the UK tax system, and there were a few recurring issues that popped up this year—some expected, some surprising!

Here’s a rundown of the most common challenges we saw and how we tackled them.

1. The Missing UTR Situation

A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC that identifies an individual for self-assessment tax purposes. You can’t file a tax return without it. But, as we discovered this year, some clients simply didn’t have one!  Not their fault, and the solution? We had to register them with HMRC—sounds simple, right? Wrong. HMRC took their time (and then some), causing unnecessary stress for clients. The delays were frustrating, but we found ways around it, whether by chasing HMRC relentlessly or ensuring other parts of the return were prepped in the meantime. Lesson learned: if you’re new to self-assessment, get that UTR sorted early!  We’ll support you fully, or do it for you.

2. Missing Information = Possible Extra Costs and Headaches

Some clients didn’t send all their financial data. It happens, and we can always assist.

A missing income statement, an overlooked expense, or a forgotten overseas investment can mean the difference between a smooth filing and a messy correction later on.

3. Non-Dom Confusion Strikes Again

Every year, the non-dom rules trip up taxpayers. Some clients assumed their status automatically gave them tax advantages, while others weren’t sure what they needed to declare.

The key takeaway here? The UK’s tax rules for non-doms are complex, but an experienced adviser should guide you through them. We spent a lot of time this season breaking down the rules, ensuring clients made the right choices (and avoided expensive mistakes). If you were a non-dom in 24/25, don’t leave it to chance—get proper advice!  It’s my job to provide it.

4. The “Wait, When’s the Deadline?” Panic

Despite the self-assessment deadline being the same every year (31st January), we have a few clients scrambling at the last minute.   Our job? To hammer that deadline home, communicating on dates.  I should and will be supporting you on this.  I need to agree a timetable with you.

5. DIY Tax Returns: No Problem at All!

Some clients decided to complete their own tax returns and then asked us to review them before submission.  That’s absolutely fine! We’re always happy to check for errors, ensure compliance, and add that extra layer of reassurance.

If you’re confident handling your return but want an expert eye on it before filing, that’s a great approach. We’re here to help, whether it’s from start to finish or just for that final check.

Final Thoughts

Tax season is always an adventure, but with the right preparation by us and advice, it doesn’t have to be stressful.
